Dimitris Pyromallis, Curator of Maria Callas Collection, Dies at 68

Dimitris Pyromallis, a 68‑year‑old Greek collector, died on 2 August 2026. Over decades he assembled a comprehensive archive of Maria Callas’s legacy, including about 4,000 vinyl records, 6,000 CDs, hundreds of books, newspaper clippings, periodicals, thousands of photographs, autographs, personal items and medals.

In 2023 Pyromallis donated the collection to the archive of the National Opera of Greece (Eθνική Λυρική Σκηνή). The institution marked the gift with the 2023 exhibition “UNBOXING CALLAS: An Archival Exploration of the Pyromallis Collection.” In 2024 President Katerina Sakellaropoulou honored him with the Golden Cross of the Order of the Phoenix for the donation. The Artistic Director George Koundetakis and the opera’s staff expressed deep condolences to his family and colleagues.
