Dimitris Varoutas, President of EETT, dies at 56

Dimitris Varoutas, the President of the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT), has passed away at the age of 56. Reports indicate his death was sudden, resulting from a heart attack while he was on vacation in Mytilene.

Varoutas was a prominent figure in both the telecommunications sector and academia. He served as a professor in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA). His professional history included serving as Vice President of Electronic Communications at EETT and as a member of the Authority for the Protection of Privacy of Communications (ADAE) between 2007 and 2016.

In recognition of his expertise, he was awarded a Jean Monnet Chair by the European Union in September 2025, focusing on European digital policies. He was also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and had authored over 170 publications in prestigious journals and conferences.
