DIN EN IEC 81355-1 standard to redefine information classification

The new DIN EN IEC 81355-1 standard is set to take effect on August 1, 2026, replacing the long-standing DIN EN 61355-1. This update represents a fundamental shift in how industrial information is organized.

While the previous standard focused on classifying document types using Document Type Classification Keys (DCC), the new standard classifies information based on its inherent content using Information Type Classification Codes (ICC). This change treats documents as ‘information containers,’ accommodating modern data formats such as 3D models, datasets, and database extracts rather than just traditional printed or digital documents.

The transition period allows for the continued use of DIN EN 61355-1 until January 31, 2028.
