Dinorah Figuera commemorates Fernando Albán's death in state custody
Dinorah Figuera, the former president of the National Assembly elected in 2015, has shared the final photograph received from councilman Fernando Albán to commemorate his death while in Venezuelan state custody in 2018.
Albán, a leader of the Primero Justicia party and councilman for the Libertador municipality of Caracas, was apprehended by agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) at Maiquetía International Airport on October 5, 2018, following a trip to New York for a United Nations meeting. He was reported dead on October 8.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has characterized the incident as an arbitrary detention and a short-term enforced disappearance, noting reports of cruel and inhuman treatment. Figuera stated that her efforts to denounce the event led to her exile, and upon her return to the country, she continues to seek truth and justice regarding the circumstances of his death.
