On the afternoon of 2 August 2026 a parked sport‑utility vehicle on a dog meadow in Hattingen, North Rhine‑Westphalia, unexpectedly moved and rolled down a slope into the Ruhr River. Two dogs were inside the vehicle. Rescue teams from the local fire brigade and the German Life‑Saving Society (DLRG) responded, but both animals could not be saved; one was retrieved by a water‑sports enthusiast, the second was found dead inside the submerged SUV. The vehicle was later lifted from the water by a recovery company. Police have opened an investigation to determine why the vehicle moved on its own.
The incident prompted a large‑scale emergency response, including the use of boats, divers and containment measures for leaking fuel. No injuries to people were reported, and the cause of the SUV’s motion remains under investigation.
