The Diocese of Augsburg released a statement saying the generosity is a “sympathetic expression of charity” but expressed a “mixed feeling” because the financial reward is seen as too close to the sacrament. The diocese warned that linking sacramental reception with money creates a “schales Gefühl” and could damage the Church’s reputation. Local pastor Andreas Jall noted that some parish members fear the scheme “sells” the Church’s image, while also pointing to the high cost of living in Upper Bavaria as a reason families may need financial help.

The diocese also reminded that Catholic parents are obliged to baptise their children promptly and that the practice should remain open to all Christian denominations, questioning whether the incentive should be limited to the Catholic faith.
