Diocese of Macau celebrates 450 years of history and mission
The Diocese of Macau is celebrating its 450th anniversary, marking its establishment by Pope Gregory XIII on January 23, 1576. During a Mass held at the Macau Cathedral, Cardinal Américo Aguiar highlighted the historical role of Macau as a missionary bridge between the West and the East, noting how missionaries traveled through the territory to reach various parts of Asia, including Korea.
In connection with the upcoming 2027 World Youth Day in Seoul, Aguiar noted that Portuguese youth are planning a pilgrimage that will include stops in both Macau and Seoul. The jubilee, themed ‘From Macau to the World: 450 Years of Mission and Mercy,’ emphasizes the deep cultural and religious ties linking Portugal, Macau, and the broader Asian region.
