Diocese of Victoria faces potential decline in priestly ordinations

Bishop Óscar Efraín Tamez Villarreal of the Diocese of Victoria has reported a recent increase in young people entering the seminary over the last five years. However, he warned that the diocese may face a decrease in the number of priestly ordinations over the next two years.

During the 49th anniversary of the Diocesan Seminary and the commencement of the Jubilee Year, the Bishop noted that seven new seminarians joined this year. Despite the steady influx of students at various educational levels, the low number of recent ordinations—with only one priest ordained last summer—suggests a gap in upcoming ceremonies. Tamez Villarreal estimates it may take two to two and a half years before the diocese holds another ordination.

The Bishop called upon the Catholic community to pray for new vocations and to support those currently in the discernment process. He also noted that vocational trends appear favorable across the ecclesiastical province, which includes the dioceses of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.
