Dionisio Rodríguez (El Dioni) Announces Candidacy for Mayor of El Molar with Vox

Seventy‑six‑year‑old Dionisio Rodríguez Martínez, known as “El Dioni” for his 1989 robbery of a armored van carrying almost 300 million pesetas, says he will run for mayor of El Molar in the Community of Madrid as a candidate of the right‑wing Vox party. He told El Cierre Digital that talks are under way to formalise the candidacy and that local residents support him, adding, “Aunque estoy jubilado y en octubre cumpliré 77 años, me gustaría presentarme como alcalde de El Molar (Madrid)… La gente me apoya y me conocen desde siempre, porque de ahí era mi madre.”

After serving three years and four months in prison in Spain and Brazil, Rodríguez has lived a quiet life in the Moratalaz district of Madrid, surviving throat cancer in 2004 and surviving on a modest pension. He claims to be in good health and plans to continue his civic involvement by seeking the municipal office.
