Dionysis Charitopoulos, prominent Greek author, dies at 79

Greek author and intellectual Dionysis Charitopoulos has died at the age of 79. His death was announced by Topos Publications, with whom he had collaborated closely since the publishing house's founding in 2007. Charitopoulos had recently been receiving medical treatment in an Athens hospital for a serious health issue.

Born in Piraeus in 1947, Charitopoulos's life and work were deeply influenced by his upbringing in working-class neighborhoods and his early experience in manual labor at the port and local factories. He was known for an unconventional, non-conformist literary style that resisted categorization into specific schools or movements.

His extensive body of work includes 24 books. Among his most significant contributions is the historical biography ‘Aris, the Leader of the Lawless’ (Aris, o archigos ton atakton), which examines the life of resistance leader Aris Velouchiotis. Other notable works include ‘Loves in the Post-Junta Era’ (Erotes sti Metapolitefsi) and his most recent book, ‘The Lawless’ (Oi Ataktoi), published in 2022. He was previously married to journalist Malvina Karali.
