Diosdado Cabello defends Venezuela's communes and announces national consultation
Diosdado Cabello, general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), has defended the country's communes and communal councils, stating they are a functional reality working for community well-being. During a broadcast of his program, ‘Con el Mazo Dando’, Cabello criticized opposition members who have dismissed these organizations.
Cabello noted that elections for commune spokespersons are currently underway. He also highlighted that the eighth National Popular Consultation is scheduled for October 18. This consultation allows communes to select priority programs for which the government will allocate resources.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez previously announced the rescheduling of this national consultation to October, following a suspension in July due to seismic activity. For the first time, condominium boards will be permitted to participate in the upcoming October consultation, which the government describes as an exercise of ‘participatory and protagonist democracy’ through organized citizens.
