West Africa faces rising diphtheria outbreaks in Nigeria and Senegal
West Africa is facing rising health challenges as diphtheria outbreaks spread across Nigeria and Senegal. In Nigeria, Plateau State has reported 25 deaths and 300 suspected cases, prompting the temporary closure of schools. Lagos State has also confirmed 6 cases and is implementing enhanced surveillance and contact tracing to prevent a wider outbreak. Earlier reports from late August indicated 48 confirmed cases and 4 deaths in Nigeria, with a high concentration of infections in eight specific states.
In Senegal, the diphtheria situation is also escalating, with 57 confirmed cases and 8 deaths reported as of September 9, 2026. The Kédougou region remains the most heavily impacted area, accounting for 27 of the total cases. Health authorities have urged parents to ensure children are up to date with vaccinations to curb the spread.
In response to broader regional threats, Senegal has launched a three-year, 13.89 billion FCFA ($24.6 million) project funded by the Pandemic Fund. This initiative utilizes the ‘One Health’ approach to strengthen national capacities in epidemiological surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, and human resource development to better prepare for future health emergencies.
