Diplomatic Council Quantum Leap warns financial sector of quantum crime risk
The Diplomatic Council Quantum Leap (DCQL), a think‑tank focused on quantum security, is urging financial‑sector regulators, banks, insurers, exchanges and the operators of financial data‑centres to treat quantum‑related cyber risk as a strategic priority. DCQL chairman Harald A. Summa warned that a “Q‑Day” – when quantum computers can break today’s encryption – could arrive sooner than many expect. Quantum‑security expert Dr Florian Fröwis called for immediate rollout of post‑quantum cryptography and an added physical security layer, while FNZ Bank board member Jürgen Fiedler said the industry largely underestimates the threat.
The warning follows the recent discovery by Anthropic’s AI system “Mythos” of thousands of long‑standing software vulnerabilities, underscoring how quickly apparent security can erode. DCQL recommends embedding quantum‑security measures in risk registers and coordinating among supervisory authorities, banking institutions and data‑centre operators to safeguard online banking, payments, card and ATM networks, securities trading, SWIFT interbank communications and digital signatures against future quantum attacks.
