Diplomatic tensions arise in Uruguay and Peru

In Uruguay, Cristina Mansilla, the Director of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, criticized President Yamandú Orsi following his comments regarding an attempted femicide at the University of the Republic (UDELAR). Orsi had described the incident as an “isolated event,” a statement that drew backlash from students and political actors. Orsi later clarified that his remarks referred to the exceptional nature of such an event occurring within a university setting, rather than downplaying gender-based violence itself.

In Peru, Foreign Minister Carlos Espá defended the government's recent diplomatic appointments against opposition criticism. Espá stated that the designations made by President Keiko Fujimori comply with Peruvian law, noting that the president has the authority to appoint up to 20% of ambassadors. He also highlighted that Argentina granted rapid diplomatic approval for the appointment of former congressman Carlos Tubino as Peru's ambassador to Argentina, which Espá interpreted as a positive sign of bilateral relations.
