Italian summer vacations shift to domestic travel and unplugging
A new survey of more than 1,000 Italian managers shows that 86.8% have taken or will take a holiday between mid‑June and mid‑September, and 82.8% intend to spend it within Italy, cutting back on overseas trips. 53% say they will be completely disconnected or reachable only for emergencies, with younger managers (under 45) most likely to stay offline.
The Automobile Club Italia reports that 75% of Italians use a car for summer travel, recording over 330 million vehicle movements between late July and early September. ACI operates a 24‑hour 803‑116 hotline, 2,000 staff and 600 rescue centres to assist motorists during the season.
The national school calendar for 2026‑27 will begin on 7 September in Bolzano, followed by staggered returns across regions through 17 September.
