Diputació de Girona urges Renfe to maintain Portbou maintenance base

Miquel Noguer, president of the Diputació de Girona, has formally requested that Renfe maintain its maintenance base in Portbou. In a letter addressed to Renfe president Álvaro Fernández Heredia, Noguer warned that the decision by Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento to cease first-level maintenance activities at the Technical Assistance Base could lead to the facility's total closure.

Noguer emphasized that Portbou is a strategic location with deep-rooted economic and social railway traditions. He argued that closing the base would jeopardize stable railway operations and high-quality employment in the Girona region. The Diputació de Girona joins previous pleas from the Portbou City Council and the UGT union to prevent the shutdown.

To preserve the facility and its associated jobs, Noguer proposed that Renfe reconsider its decision by assigning new work loads to the site and internalizing activities that could be performed by Renfe's own personnel.
