Dique Soldano undergoes reinforcement to mitigate flood risks

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Water and Energy is conducting major maintenance and reinforcement works at the Dique Soldano in the Quebrada de Zonda. These interventions, carried out under the framework of the Provincial Emergency Committee (COPRE), aim to prepare the structure for the upcoming season of increased water flows.

The project includes cleaning, desilting, channelization, and margin protection to improve water flow and mitigate risks to populated areas, productive zones, and roads. Additionally, work is planned for the dam's gate to enhance water management capabilities. The Dique Soldano is a critical component of the regional water system, directing flows toward the Estero de Zonda and contributing to the water supply for Greater San Juan.

With a history dating back to 1869, the site has seen various defensive structures, including the current dam designed by engineer Ferruccio A. Soldano and built between 1904 and 1905. Following a period without comprehensive maintenance, these current works seek to restore hydraulic capacity and reduce the pressure and speed of mountain runoff during potential flood events.
