Diraq expands U.S. footprint with new New Mexico quantum lab
Diraq, a Sydney-based quantum computing startup, is expanding its United States presence by establishing a new research and development laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The facility, located at the Roadrunner Quantum Lab, is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
The expansion is supported by matching funds from the state of New Mexico as part of the DARPA Quantum Benchmarking Initiative’s Stage B. The lab will be equipped with Maybell cryogenic equipment to facilitate advanced device characterization and testing. Diraq aims to develop silicon-based processors capable of reaching millions of qubits by utilizing existing standard CMOS foundry lines, which the company describes as the most economical and scalable approach.
This move complements Diraq’s existing U.S. operations in Palo Alto, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as its research centers in Australia. The company’s commercialization strategy involves significant international investment, including interest in the U.S. CHIPS program and support from Australia’s National Reconstruction Fund.
