Chuck Russell, director of “The Mask”, dies at 74

American film director Chuck Russell died unexpectedly at age 74 on July 22 in his home near San Diego, California. His wife Ania found him unconscious, called emergency services and, despite the fire department’s rapid response, he could not be revived. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Russell was known for pioneering visual effects in genre cinema. His most celebrated work is the 1994 comedy *The Mask* starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz, which grossed over $350 million worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination for visual effects. Other notable titles include *A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors* (1987), *The Blob* (1988), *Eraser* (1996) and *The Scorpion King* (2002). His last project was the 2024 horror remake *Witchboard*, which he wrote, directed and produced.

Jim Carrey posted a tribute, saying, “I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who during the shooting of *The Mask* created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set… *The Mask* is one of the jewels of my creative life.”
