Director and writer Curry Barker disclosed that several studios offered him up to two million dollars to rewrite Bear as a traditional hero, but he declined, insisting the character’s flawed decisions were essential to the story’s tension and appeal.

Barker explained that making Bear more heroic would have rendered the plot predictable and diminished the film’s impact.
