Director Kane Parsons dismissed rumors of a Backrooms sequel, describing the reports as “more like a hallucination.” After the A24 horror film opened in the United States with an $81.5 million debut on a $10 million budget—setting a new opening record for the studio—Parsons said his focus now is on expanding the franchise into a television series, which he believes is the ideal format to explore its extensive mythology.

The film follows Clark, a furniture‑store owner portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who discovers a portal to a series of unsettling liminal spaces called the Backrooms. As his therapist Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve) searches for him, the story culminates in a disturbing dinner‑table scene where Clark, having adapted to the timeless void, reveals his contentment with the “still‑life” inhabitants and his refusal to change.
