Naoki Hamaguchi to pause FFVII remakes after Revelation release

Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII: Revelation will launch in spring 2027 on PC and current‑generation consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2). The release concludes more than a decade of work by series director Naoki Hamaguchi, who oversaw Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Rebirth and now Revelation.

In a Game Informer interview Hamaguchi said he is fully focused on finishing Revelation and that he plans to step back from further remakes. He indicated his next creative effort will likely be another JRPG for Square Enix, possibly within the Final Fantasy universe or an entirely new IP. Hamaguchi also shared personal details, noting he has played Revelation around 40 times and a particular emotional scene still moves him.

During a fan Q&A in Shanghai, Hamaguchi hinted that Revelation may incorporate characters from the broader FFVII compilation, such as Cissnei and other spin‑off figures, though he did not confirm specifics. The director emphasized the goal of creating a single, new FFVII experience that weaves together elements from the original game and its spin‑offs.
