Director Nguyễn Quang Dũng addresses AI controversy in debut animation
Director Nguyễn Quang Dũng has addressed public controversy regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in his debut 3D animated film, ‘Thế giới trần trụi’ (The Naked World). Following the release of the trailer, social media users raised concerns about the role of AI in the production process, criticizing the visual quality, inconsistent styles, and unnatural character movements.
Dũng clarified that AI is utilized only as a supporting tool and not as a replacement for human creativity. He emphasized that the production team remains intact, including screenwriters, character and background artists, cinematographers, and editors. The director noted that he has spent the past year working with international AI companies to understand the technology's capabilities and limitations.
Addressing the economic challenges of the Vietnamese animation market, Dũng explained that the project is based on an idea he has held for 20 years. To mitigate financial risks in a small market, he has contributed his own labor as a shareholder to reduce production costs. He also asserted that the AI used is trained on copyrighted materials provided by the team rather than being generated through simple text prompts.
