Director Đào Duy Phúc discusses new war film 'Thanh âm vượt đại dương

Director Đào Duy Phúc discusses the production and reception of the state-commissioned film "Thanh âm vượt đại dương" (Sounds Across the Ocean). The project, which took 10 years to develop from its initial concept in 2014, focuses on the history of Côn Đảo.

Rather than focusing solely on a prison break, the director utilized the music of the Vietnamese monochord (đàn bầu) as a narrative tool to explore the past and present. The film integrates three main plotlines: a romance between characters Duy and Tâm, a Communist-led prison escape plan, and the perspectives of French individuals and jailers at Côn Đảo.
