Tamaulipas judges link three suspects to Dafne Zapata feminicide
On 16‑17 July 2026, 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata died at the Academia Militarizada Doenitz in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, the cause being asphyxiation by submersion. A control judge later linked three people to the feminicide: Danna Yanina Cruz Figueroa as a material author, Estrellita Mora as a material author, and Jorge Luis Ponce Ortega for commission by omission. All three were placed under preventive detention – three months for Danna Yanina and six months for Estrellita and Jorge Luis – and their initial hearings were held by videoconference after security concerns following protests at the courthouse. The victim’s family lawyer announced the intention to request the maximum penalty of 60 years imprisonment for the accused.
