Director Yeon Sang-ho finds success with low-budget film ‘Paradise Lost’
Director Yeon Sang-ho is demonstrating the commercial viability of low-budget filmmaking in South Korea. His latest thriller, ‘Paradise Lost’, has surpassed 100,000 viewers in its opening week and secured second place at the domestic box office.
Produced with a net budget of approximately 500 million won, the film achieved significant international interest by being pre-sold to 118 countries before its release. This follows the success of Yeon’s previous film, ‘Face’, which was produced for 200 million won and drew 1.08 million viewers.
Industry analysts suggest these successes challenge the current trend of focusing investment solely on large-scale blockbusters. By prioritizing planning and artistic quality over massive production costs, these projects offer a more diversified investment model. However, experts note that for this trend to stabilize, the industry must improve distribution and screening opportunities for mid-to-low budget films to ensure they reach wider audiences.
