Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seizes gold in multiple smuggling operations
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has conducted multiple successful operations to intercept significant quantities of smuggled gold and narcotics entering India.
In one recent operation, officials seized 1.3 kg of gold biscuits valued at Rs 1.8 crore. The smuggling method involved concealing the gold on luggage trolleys used by unsuspecting passengers traveling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The perpetrators reportedly followed these travelers to retrieve the gold after they had cleared customs.
In a separate incident near the India-Bangladesh border, the DRI Siliguri Regional Unit intercepted 8.352 kg of gold biscuits worth approximately Rs 12.36 crore. Four suspects were arrested in Cooch Behar after officials discovered the gold, which bore foreign markings, concealed in specially designed waist belts. The suspects were remanded to judicial custody following a court appearance.
These seizures follow other recent DRI actions, including the interception of 15.59 kg of narcotic drugs such as cocaine and heroin, and the dismantling of an international syndicate in Mumbai involving gold and diamonds.
