Directors refuse Harry Potter series over J. K. Rowling controversy

Directors Ally Pankiw (Black Mirror) and Kate Herron (Loki) have publicly refused opportunities to work on the upcoming Harry Potter television series produced by HBO. Pankiw stated her refusal was a decision to not “finance transphobia,” citing the controversial activism of author J. K. Rowling regarding transgender rights.

Herron confirmed she was approached twice for the project but maintained a consistent refusal. The controversy stems from Rowling’s public stances and financial support for organizations that oppose legal recognition for transgender women. While Warner Bros. Discovery has attempted to publicly distance the production from Rowling, she remains an executive producer on the series and is financially linked to its development.

Cast members have also expressed conflicting views; actress Bel Powley stated she is “deeply in disagreement” with the creator while participating in the production, highlighting the ongoing debate regarding whether the franchise can be separated from its author.
