Clothes can retain unpleasant odors after a wash when the washing machine itself is unclean. Residues of dirt, leftover detergent, fabric fibers, and mold can build up on the drum and rubber seals, transferring smells to the laundry. Overloading the machine prevents water and detergent from reaching every garment, leaving sweat, oil, and dirt untreated, which later produces a stale smell. Using too much detergent or fabric softener leaves residues that trap moisture and promote mildew. Leaving clothes inside the washer for several hours creates a humid environment that encourages bacterial growth, and improper drying methods can also cause odors to cling to fabrics.

To avoid these issues, regularly clean the washing‑machine drum and seals, avoid packing the drum too tightly, use the recommended amount of detergent, remove clothes promptly after the cycle ends, and dry them in a well‑ventilated area.
