Disability care in the Netherlands shifts focus to client independence
The Dutch disability care sector is shifting its focus toward promoting client independence and community integration. Theo van Uum, director of Vereniging Gehandicaptenzorg Nederland (VGN), states that this transition is necessary due to growing personnel shortages. Currently, 190,000 people work in the sector, but an additional 8,000 are needed immediately, with the deficit potentially exceeding 20,000 within eight years.
In Amsterdam, the care provider Philadelphia has already implemented this model. Clients live as independently as possible and participate in the local community through activities such as running a bicycle repair shop and performing laundry services for local businesses. This approach aims to focus on the individual's capabilities rather than their limitations.
Other regional initiatives in the Netherlands are also addressing aging and independence. In Roermond, the Laurentius hospital is hosting information sessions on self-reliance and fall prevention. Meanwhile, in Noord-Holland, the Regional Elderly Delegation and SamenMeer are organizing meetings to help residents aged 55 and older strengthen their social networks through tools like the Social Scan and informal neighborhood support circles.
