Disability discrimination complaints rise in Spain's care home and schools

A worker at the Fundación Hogar San Juan in Jerez filed a complaint with the Spanish labour inspectorate, alleging serious violations of fundamental rights. The employee, who has a 65 % disability and limited mobility, says he was dismissed while on sick leave, faced a hostile and discriminatory workplace, and experienced a leak of personal medical data. The local bishop urged the complainant to take the case to the courts, while the institution has not provided requested internal documents.

In a separate case, more than 25 interim teachers across Spanish regions have been declared unfit for duty or dismissed on health grounds. The teachers claim the evaluation process lacks transparency, with decisions based on brief medical interviews and without access to their medical records or the rationale behind the assessments. They criticize the regional education authority for opaque criteria and for refusing adaptations that would allow them to continue working.
