Disability employment advocates promote inclusive hiring during NDEAM

October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a period dedicated to celebrating the contributions of workers with disabilities and advocating for more inclusive hiring practices.

In Oklahoma, the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) is working to educate employers on the professional value of hiring individuals with disabilities. One success story involves David Joy, a former Boeing employee who regained employment through the DRS Business Enterprise Program after losing his sight due to a medical emergency.

In the Midwest, Easterseals Midwest is providing support to help individuals find meaningful employment that fosters independence and community involvement. The organization offers services ranging from autism support to independent living skills. To address employer misconceptions regarding accommodations, Easterseals Midwest works with businesses to navigate available resources, such as assistance with transportation, uniforms, and workplace modifications through partnerships with vocational rehabilitation and mental health departments.
