Disability rights advocates raise accessibility concerns in Italy
Disability rights organizations in Italy are calling for improved access to services and better awareness of available benefits. In Ragusa, the CGIL trade union has written to local mayors to urge the promotion of the European Disability Card. Although introduced in 2021, officials note the card remains underutilized, despite providing access to public and private discounts for transport, museums, and cultural venues.
In Vibo Valentia, the Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted (UICI) met with Prefect Anna Aurora Colosimo to address significant barriers to healthcare. Representatives highlighted how architectural obstacles and a lack of accessible information prevent visually impaired citizens from accessing medical services safely and independently. The Prefect has pledged support to coordinate with relevant institutions to address these accessibility issues.
