Disability rights and benefits in Germany

In Germany, individuals applying for recognition of a severe disability often encounter the '2-km rule.' While frequently perceived as a rigid threshold for determining disability status, legal precedents clarify that this distance is merely a guideline rather than a mechanical formula. The rule primarily influences whether the 'G' marker—signifying significant impairment of mobility in road traffic—is granted, rather than determining the Degree of Disability (GdB) itself. The GdB measures how much health impairments affect social participation, with a score of 50 or higher legally classifying an individual as severely disabled.

Severely disabled individuals may access various benefits and compensations. These include discounts at cultural and leisure facilities, reduced mobile phone tariffs, and advantages in public transportation. For those with specific markers, such as 'Bl' (visual impairment), 'H' (assistance required), or 'VB/EB' (war/service disabled), certain transit value stamps may be provided free of charge. Other eligible individuals may need to pay an annual fee for these transit benefits.
