Disability rights and social aid face legislative scrutiny in Argentina and Chile
Legislative bodies in Argentina and Chile are facing criticism regarding the treatment of disability rights and social assistance.
In Argentina, Deputy Victoria Tolosa Paz has backed a petition signed by 1,583 individuals and organizations protesting a majority report in the Chamber of Deputies. The report seeks to replace the current Disability Emergency Law with a permanent framework. Signatories argue the proposal lacks sufficient participation from the disability community and could result in a loss of rights or leave essential aspects subject to executive regulation.
In Chile, the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill to provide economic compensation via VAT refunds for the purchase of diapers and medicines. However, the measure has drawn intense criticism for its limited impact, with lawmakers noting a projected monthly saving of approximately $5,000 against expenses exceeding $150,000. Furthermore, the Chamber rejected an amendment proposed by Deputy Sofía González that would have prioritized individuals registered in the National Disability Registry who require permanent support or have severe dependencies.
