Disabled citizens in Turkey report employment and welfare struggles

Individuals with disabilities in Turkey are highlighting significant barriers to employment and financial stability.

Aynur Ürek, a university graduate with a 51 percent spastic disability, has expressed frustration over her inability to secure work despite multiple degrees and numerous civil service exams. She reported being blocked from a position at the Ministry of Health due to medical report clauses and alleged she was dismissed from a municipal warehouse role following local elections. She also cited age limits in job postings as a barrier to employment.

In Elazığ, Öztürk Kaya, who has a 46 percent physical disability, reported struggling to survive on a monthly disability pension of 5,800 lira. Kaya stated that the funds are insufficient to cover rent or medical expenses for his spouse, who suffers from chronic illnesses. Due to the high cost of a new prosthetic leg, Kaya has been forced to repair his current one using adhesive tape.
