Disarmament Week promotes global awareness of weapons dangers
Disarmament Week, observed annually from October 24 to 30, serves as a global initiative to raise public awareness regarding the dangers of nuclear, conventional, and autonomous weapons. Established in 1978 following the first special session of the United Nations General Assembly dedicated to disarmament, the week coincides with the anniversary of the UN's founding.
The initiative highlights the contrast between rising global military spending—reaching nearly $2.9 trillion in 2025—and the urgent need for funding in sectors such as education, healthcare, and climate adaptation. It emphasizes that true security is achieved through negotiation and dialogue rather than the expansion of arsenals, addressing modern threats like the illicit trafficking of small arms and the militarization of space.
