Disaster Preparedness: Essential Guidelines for Emergency Kits and Home Stockpiling

Effective disaster preparedness involves a three-tiered approach: 0-level preparedness (small items carried daily), 1-level preparedness (emergency backpacks for immediate evacuation), and 2-level preparedness (home stockpiling for extended stays).

Emergency backpacks should be designed for the first 1–2 days of evacuation. Recommended items include water (500ml bottles), non-perishable food, essential medications, first aid kits, portable toilets, flashlights, radios, and mobile batteries. To ensure mobility, weight limits are suggested at approximately 15kg for men and 10kg for women. Specific needs should be addressed for women, infants, the elderly, and pets.

Home stockpiling (2-level preparedness) focuses on long-term survival if staying indoors. Guidelines suggest maintaining at least a 3-day, ideally a 1-week supply of food and approximately 3 liters of water per person per day. Rotating stock by consuming older items and replacing them is a recommended strategy.
