Disaster preparedness gaps identified in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand

Recent surveys and expert analyses highlight a significant gap in disaster preparedness across East and Southeast Asia. A LINE Yahoo study of 1,260 individuals in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand revealed that while awareness of risks like earthquakes and floods is high, a vast majority feel their preparations are insufficient. Specifically, 88.1% of Japanese respondents reported inadequate preparedness.

In Japan, concerns regarding a major earthquake directly beneath the capital are prominent, with experts warning of long-term urban challenges including infrastructure damage, waste management issues, and disrupted transportation networks. Research among youth also indicates that while many high school students know their local evacuation sites, over 60% have not established specific communication plans with their families.

To combat “preparedness fatigue,” experts suggest adopting “phase-free” strategies—integrating emergency supplies into daily life through “reward stockpiling” of preferred foods. Additionally, digital tools are being utilized to combat the rising threat of misinformation during disasters, which has been reported by a significant portion of respondents in Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan.
