Disaster preparedness survey highlights lack of bedding supplies
A recent survey by Moon Moon regarding disaster preparedness in Japan reveals a significant gap in sleeping arrangements. While most households prioritize drinking water, emergency food, and flashlights, only 4.5% of respondents have prepared bedding such as blankets or sleeping bags.
In terms of anxieties during evacuation, the lack of proper toilet environments was the top concern (16.3%), followed by privacy issues (15.8%) and temperature regulation (15.0%). Approximately 90% of participants recognize that sleep deprivation during disasters poses health risks, yet many expressed uncertainty about which specific sleep-related goods to purchase.
To address these needs, experts suggest that if bulky bedding is difficult to store, individuals should consider compact items like eye masks and earplugs to mitigate light and noise in shelters. Additionally, portable items like folding camping mats can help alleviate the discomfort of hard floors.
