Rio Doce biodiversity recovery projects launched by IEF
The State Forestry Institute (IEF) has introduced new projects to restore aquatic biodiversity in the Rio Doce basin. These initiatives follow the 2015 Fundão dam collapse in Mariana, which released millions of cubic meters of iron ore tailings into the environment, affecting water quality and ecosystems across Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
Key initiatives include ‘Projeto Renasce Doce’, which focuses on revitalizing aquatic ecosystems by addressing the causes of biodiversity decline, and ‘Projeto Peixes do Amanhã’, aimed at recovering native fish populations, particularly endangered species. Currently, native species account for approximately 25% of fish of interest for fishing in the basin.
These actions are part of the Rio Doce Reparation Agreement signed in October 2024 between the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, the Federal Government, and companies Samarco Mineração S.A., Vale S.A., and BHP Billiton Brasil Ltda.
