Discard cooking pans with damaged non‑stick coating, warped bases or rust

A cooking pan should be replaced when the non‑stick coating starts to peel or chip, when the bottom becomes warped and heats unevenly, or when rust penetrates the material. Peeling coating can release particles into food, and warped pans cause uneven cooking and oil pooling. Older pans may contain PFOA, PFAS, lead or cadmium, while modern models are produced without these substances.

If a pan is still functional but no longer needed, it can be donated to charities, social markets or second‑hand stores. Severely damaged pans that cannot be repaired should be taken to recycling facilities rather than being thrown in regular waste, to avoid environmental contamination.
