Discord develops Game Mode to reduce CPU and GPU usage
Discord is reportedly developing a new “Game Mode” for its desktop client to optimize system performance during gameplay. The feature, which was discovered in an unreleased version of the client by Discord Previews, is designed to automatically detect when a game is running and reduce the application's impact on hardware resources.
Once activated, the mode will reduce or disable various visual elements, such as animations and interface effects, to free up CPU and GPU capacity for the active game. This automation aims to provide a smoother experience, particularly for users on older or lower-end hardware, without requiring them to manually adjust settings like “Reduced Motion” every time they play.
The development follows a series of ongoing optimization efforts by Discord. Recent updates, including a move to Electron 42, have already resulted in measurable decreases in median CPU usage. While the feature has been spotted in the code with an “Enable Game Mode” toggle, Discord has not yet officially announced a release date or confirmed specific performance benchmarks.
