Discord removes apps used to bypass live video suspension in Brazil
Discord has removed third-party applications that were being used in Brazil to bypass a suspension of its live streaming features. The suspension was originally imposed by the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) following the death of a 13-year-old girl in Mato Grosso do Sul, who was reportedly induced to suicide by members of closed online groups during a live broadcast.
Discord stated that these external services, which allowed real-time video sharing during group calls, operated without the company’s authorization and violated its terms of use. The platform announced it acted “immediately” to remove the apps to comply with regulatory requirements and is currently in dialogue with the ANPD to work toward restoring video features for Brazilian users.
The ANPD has requested formal clarifications from Discord regarding the bypass and warned that failure to comply with preventive measures could result in further sanctions, including daily fines.
