Discord to index public server messages in web search engines

Discord has announced a major update that will allow selected messages from its “Discoverable Servers” to be indexed by search engines like Google. The rollout will occur in two phases: starting November 16, 2026, all Discoverable Servers will receive dedicated web pages featuring AI-generated summaries of public channel discussions. By mid-December 2026, individual messages from eligible public channels will also become searchable on the open web.

Discoverable Servers are defined as public communities with at least 1,000 members that can be joined without an invitation. Private servers, direct messages, and group DMs are excluded from this change. To protect user privacy, Discord stated that usernames and avatars will not be displayed alongside indexed messages. Additionally, the feature will not include messages sent prior to the mid-December rollout.

The company aims to make community-generated knowledge, such as gaming guides and technical troubleshooting, more accessible to the wider internet. However, the move has raised privacy concerns, particularly within cryptocurrency communities and among users who fear their data may be used for AI training.

Discord has provided opt-out mechanisms. Users can disable message visibility in their “Data & Privacy” settings, while server administrators can control which channels are included via “Web Presence” settings. Due to local data protection laws, the feature will be disabled by default for users in the European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, as well as for minor users.
