Discount retailer private labels outperform expensive brands in cleaning tests

Recent consumer testing and industry analysis indicate that discount retailer private labels are frequently outperforming expensive brand-name cleaning products in both efficacy and value.

In a test conducted by Öko-Test on 25 different toilet cleaners, several private labels from retailers such as Edeka, REWE, Aldi, and Lidl achieved high ratings. Some of these budget options cost as little as 95 cents per liter. Notably, some well-known brand-name products performed poorly compared to these cheaper alternatives.

Regarding the manufacturing of these budget goods, historical data shows that major corporations like Henkel previously produced large quantities for discount brands. However, in 2007, Henkel sold its entire European private-label business to focus exclusively on its premium brands, such as Persil and Spee. This shift highlights the changing landscape of supply chains for supermarket house brands.
