DiscoverCars Survey Shows US Drivers Confident in Basic Car Maintenance

DiscoverCars.com, a global car‑rental comparison platform, surveyed American drivers about their confidence in performing routine vehicle upkeep. The questionnaire asked participants "how do you feel about car maintenance?" and recorded high self‑reported competence across several tasks.

Ninety‑one percent said they could reliably check tire pressure and tread wear, while 90% felt comfortable inspecting fluids such as brake fluid, motor oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid. Eighty‑nine percent indicated they could change a flat tire if needed. Eighty percent reported knowing how to use jumper cables and replace wiper blades, and 66% said they could change a car’s light bulbs.

The findings suggest a majority of US motorists feel capable of handling basic maintenance, though the survey also highlighted lingering uncertainties about accessing newer vehicle components like covered 12‑volt batteries.
