Discovery documentary explores Hakka heritage in Taiwan
Discovery, in partnership with the Hakka Affairs Council in Taiwan, is releasing a new three-part documentary titled ‘Under the Hakka Liugdui Sun’. The series explores the historic Hakka settlement region of Liugdui in southern Taiwan, which has hosted Hakka communities for over 300 years.
The documentary is divided into three episodes focusing on water, agriculture, and food. It examines how the community manages groundwater, pioneers sustainable crops, and utilizes local materials like betel nut for botanical dyeing. The series also highlights how Hakka identity is preserved through ancestral rituals, communal feasts, and evolving culinary traditions.
The documentary is scheduled to premiere in Southeast Asia on the Discovery Channel and TLC on August 20.
