Discrimination reports surge during Amsterdam WorldPride launch

During the opening weekend of WorldPride in Amsterdam, the anti‑LGBTQ+ discrimination hotline operated by RITA received more than 70 reports, far exceeding its usual daily total of a few incidents. The complaints came mainly from attendees heading home after the Milkshake Festival and the Pride Walk, as well as from people traveling to the events on public transport across the Netherlands.

RITA, a partnership between the Amsterdam municipality and the organization Discriminatie.nl, said the rise may be linked to its increased visibility, the presence of "safer spaces" at Pride venues and the availability of an online reporting platform. It warned that the recorded cases likely represent only a fraction of the overall problem. On Tuesday evening a ceremony at the Homomonument commemorated victims of the Berlin Pride attack, in which one person was killed and dozens injured.

The surge in discrimination reports highlights ongoing safety concerns for the LGBTQ+ community during large public events in the Netherlands.
