Dishwasher Care: Regular Cleaning Prevents Build‑up and Odors

Dishwashers run daily with hot water and detergent, but food residues, grease and limescale gradually accumulate in the filter, door seals and spray‑arm openings. Over time this reduces cleaning performance, leaves glasses cloudy and can cause unpleasant smells when the door is opened.

Cleaning frequency depends on the model, usage intensity and water hardness. Many manufacturers advise checking the filter after each use, but a practical approach is to inspect it at least weekly for daily users, and monthly for occasional use. The filter, located at the bottom of the unit, traps crumbs, seeds, bone fragments and paper labels. When clogged, water flow is restricted and dirt may be redeposited on dishes. The door gasket and the interior edges around the door also collect grease and debris and should be wiped with a soft, damp cloth. Use a soft brush for the filter and avoid abrasive sponges that could damage the mesh. After cleaning, ensure the filter is correctly re‑installed to prevent leaks into the pump and spray arms.
